How to Show Appreciation to Your Partner (Beyond “Thanks”)

Why appreciation protects relationships, how to make it specific and sincere, and daily habits that keep gratitude alive.

In long relationships, kindness often fades into routine. We notice what is missing more than what is present. Making a habit of appreciation is one of the simplest ways to keep warmth alive.

Why it matters

Feeling valued makes people more generous, more open and more willing to give. John Gottman’s research on couples highlights the importance of positive interactions, with happier couples showing many more small moments of warmth alongside their conflicts. You do not need to count them, but the principle holds: little things add up.

Make it specific

“Thanks for everything” is pleasant but blurry. “Thank you for taking the late shift with the kids so I could rest, I really felt looked after” names the action and the effect. Use a simple formula: what they did + how it helped or felt.

Appreciate character, not just actions

Also say what you admire in them: “I love how patient you are with my mother.” This tells them you see who they are.

Daily habits

  • Say one specific thank-you a day.
  • Notice the invisible work: the bins, the bills, the emotional labour.
  • Leave a short note or send a message with no request attached.
  • Thank them in front of others.
  • Say it in their love language: a hug, a favour, quality time, a small gift, or words.

Avoid the traps

  • Backhanded appreciation. “Thanks for finally doing the dishes” cancels itself.
  • Transactional thanks. Gratitude offered only to get something back feels hollow.
  • Waiting for special occasions. Ordinary Tuesdays are ideal.

When it feels awkward

Start small and be sincere. It is fine if your first attempts feel clumsy.
