Journaling Through Heartbreak: How to Start

How writing about painful feelings can help, a simple five-step method, and prompts to try today.

When feelings loop endlessly in your head, writing them down gives them edges. Journaling will not remove pain, but many people find it helps them understand what they feel and see a way forward.

What research says

Psychologist James Pennebaker and colleagues studied “expressive writing”, where people write about difficult experiences for around fifteen to twenty minutes over several days. Many participants reported feeling better afterwards, though results vary and writing is no replacement for professional care.

A simple method

  1. Set a timer. Ten to fifteen minutes is plenty.
  2. Write without editing. Spelling, grammar and kindness to the other person do not matter here.
  3. Be specific. “I miss how you hummed while cooking” says more than “I miss you”.
  4. Include the body. Where do you feel it? Chest, stomach, throat?
  5. End with a small kindness. Write one sentence you would say to a friend in your place.

Prompts to try

  • What is the hardest part of today?
  • What do I miss that is not them?
  • What did I learn about myself in this relationship?
  • What do I need to forgive myself for?
  • What is one small thing that helped today?

You will find more in our Heartbreak Journal and the mood-based Breakup Feelings Journal.

Keeping it safe

Your journal is private, so write without holding back. If a session leaves you shaken, stop, breathe, drink some water and do something grounding. If writing repeatedly brings up overwhelming distress, speak with a counsellor.

Re-reading

After a few weeks, re-read your entries. Most people are surprised by how much has shifted. That change is easy to miss day to day, and a journal makes it visible.
